Onboarding
Overview of the product design onboarding playbook
Welcome 🙌
We're excited for you to join Mattermost as a Product Designer. Below you'll find everything you need to get ramped up and start designing.
If something's missing, add your suggestion as a comment and we'll review it. We love improving things, all feedback is helpful.
The first few weeks may feel a bit slow, don't worry, that's completely normal. There's a lot of information being thrown your way, and it will take time to digest.
The goal for the first few weeks
Listen to all the information we throw your way, absorb as much of it as you can, and ask as many questions as possible along the way.
Don't hesitate to ask questions along the way to clarify things; or if you need things repeated.
Product Design Buddy
You will be assigned a Product Design Buddy to help you navigate the waters. Your buddy will help with your 90-day onboarding plan, which includes tasks such as scheduling 1:1’s, coffee chats, and other activities to help during your first 90-days 🙂 .
Product Designers at Mattermost
Product Designers sit in the R&D organization of Mattermost; however, we interact with all teams and areas across the business to ensure the success of the product and experience for our users.
Strategic priorities
Product Designers are responsible for defining and designing the functional and visual experience of the Mattermost products. The decision and solutions we design are based on strategic priorities that align with our vision and business goals. Designers are tasked with building features that help ensure the product is profitable by meeting present and future customer and user needs.
Understanding that each customer and user has their own set of specific requirements, use cases, and preferences; a Product Designer must understand the needs of the customer, user, and the business to help employ value in the areas that provide the highest return for the larger audience. Keeping in mind that decisions should be backed by research including competitor analysis, pattern research, industry standards, and relying on past experiences.
Guiding principles
Principles are important to us, it’s rooted in everything we do at Mattermost. Here are a few helpful resources as you being your journey:
